About Hypnosis
So how and why does Hypnotic Therapy work?
The Conscious and the Un-conscious mind.
We normally use our conscious minds for
judging things; for example, distances and closing speeds whilst
driving a car or cycling.
We also use our conscious mind to program our unconscious mind which then takes over mundane repetitive tasks just like a computer does.
However, whilst the conscious mind is clever for its size (12 percent
of the brain volume) it is easily overloaded, having at most 3% spare
capacity.
So, when there is a conflict between an idea (a program) in the
un-conscious mind and the Will of the conscious mind, the un-conscious
almost always wins. Thats why it is so difficult to give up established
habits (like smoking) by will-power alone.
The more an idea is re-enforced in the
un-conscious by whatever means the more difficult it is for the
conscious mind to override it. This because there is a gate-keeper in
the brain which enables the unconscious to acquire new data but makes
it difficult for the conscious mind to change it. A lot of this
information has been there since early childhood.
Normally this is to our advantage because it stops us doing many foolish, dangerous things on the spur of the moment.
However, problems can arise when our un-conscious has incorrect or inappropriate information in it.
So, whilst you may consciously accept
that smoking is killing you or that spiders are generally harmless
creatures, if your un-conscious mind believes the opposite then you may
be unable to give up smoking before it kills you or you may continue to
be ruled by your phobia of spiders (or whatever) no matter how strong
the will power of your conscious mind may be.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis can address this by bypassing
the "Gatekeeper" and the critical faculty of the conscious mind and
rewriting your desired changes to your "program", "world view" or "self
image" directly into your unconscious mind.
Its safe!
Whilst the un-conscious will permit changes
under Hypnosis that are in the subjects best interests it will reject
ideas which are in opposition to that persons moral code.
